Niantic alternative: reviews from refugees

What does it look like when a Pokémon GO veteran, an Ingress player, and a casual mover all test an indie alternative side by side? Three honest reviews from the closed beta, including one from somebody who knows the Niantic ecosystem firsthand.

Refugee perspective

Why these reviews matter

Niantic alternatives are a flooded category, and most of the reviews out there come from launch-day promo. These three are different:

  • Aljoscha P. is an Ingress veteran. He tested MapRaiders against Niantic's actual mechanics, not against marketing.
  • Vivian N. tried Pokémon GO in 2018 and quit. The 2026 indie alternative is her first re-entry to the genre.
  • Ron C. isn't a gamer at all. His test answers the question: does the genre even work for non-gamers?

5.0 out of 5 from three closed-beta reviews

Ron walks his dog every day in the Stuttgart area, Vivian runs around Hamburg's Alster every morning, Aljoscha covers Berlin on foot. The three of them used MapRaiders for several weeks inside their normal routines and reported back in German. We only use first name plus initial here, at the testers' request.

I played Pokémon GO for three years and eventually quit. The thing I was missing never showed up: real land instead of fleeting gym captures. When the Saudi acquisition hit in 2025 it was clear to me that the Niantic model wasn't heading anywhere I wanted to follow. So I'm building MapRaiders myself. No ads, no investor pressure, no required sub. My block is my playing field; yours is up for grabs.

My dog needs his two walks a day no matter what, so I just bring my block along now. Sounds silly, but I check every evening to see if it's still blue.

I run every morning anyway, but now I'm also defending something. My Alster loop is mine and I want to keep it that way. Weird how much discipline that suddenly mobilizes.

You leave a short audio clip at a doorway, and three days later somebody you don't know has found it. It feels weirdly intimate for a game.
